The Upper
Fraser Valley is home to Agassiz, the Commercial Centre of the
District of Kent a part
of the Fraser Valley Regional
District. Agassiz is located on the north bank of the Fraser River about
100 km from Vancouver. The District of Kent has a population of
about 5,000 people. Other
communities that are close to Agassiz within the
District of Kent
are Chehalis, Harrison Mills, Seabird
Island, Kilby, Ruby Creek, & Woodside Village.
The two major highways connecting Kent
with the Valley are the Lougheed Highway # 7 running East and West and
Highway 9 which runs north and south. Five miles (8 km) north of Agassiz
is the community of Harrison Hot Springs .
The
Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre,
located in Agassiz, which is part of the research branch of Agriculture
& Agri-Food Canada. Research is conducted on intensive crop production
systems, integrated pest management, poultry nutrition and sustainable
agriculture.
