The smiles on
children's will be brighter on Christmas morning thanks to the
generosity of the B.C. Wooden Toy Makers Society. As bright as the
smiles on the faces of the members as they delivered boxes and boxes of
beautiful, hand crafted toys to the Agassiz-Harrison Community Services
office again this year.
The creation
of this new non-profit society began in 2003, developing from members
of the Fraser Valley Wood Workers Guild. Local resident Alan Birtch, is
one of the rapidly growing society's members. "It's growing all the
time," Alan says, "we now have 50 members!"
Lining the
halls of the AHCS building, are doll cradles, and cribs, complete with
mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows and quilts created by the "The
Snappy Snippers," who work with the society. Rolling wooden ducks,
trucks and airplanes are also a few examples of the toys included in the
many boxes that were donated.
Most of the
supplies required to make the toys are supplied by sponsors such as
Windsor Plywood & Lee Valley Tools. The members work at
home creating toys from January to November, then distribute the toys in
Chilliwack, Agassiz, Hope and Abbotsford in conjunction with local
Community Services Organizations and the Salvation Army. The society
plans to distribute more than 1,000 toys to underprivileged children of
all ages in the Fraser Valley again this year.
