Senior Peer Support is a FREE one-to-one service provided by trained senior volunteers who offer emotional support, guidance and empathy, to at-risk peers troubled by loneliness, depression, isolation from family and  friends, loss of loved ones, conflict with loved ones and other life changes.

Are you facing anxiety, frustration, difficulty? Because of:

  • A new living situation

  • Relocation

  • Retirement changes

  • Reduced income

  • Health & aging concerns

  • Bereavement

WE BELIEVE Seniors prefer to talk to other seniors who have similar life experiences.

CONFIDENTIALITY ASSURED

Our Mission Statement:

To assist and encourage seniors to

take control of their own lives.

Senior Peer Counselling Code:

We are here . . .

  • Not to give answers, but to help people actively manage their own problems.

  • Not to remake someone's life but, where necessary to help them refashion their lives according to their own values.

  • To help seniors develop sense of self-sufficiency.

  • To help empower seniors so that they can feel in control of their own lives.

Where does counselling take place?

Wherever the client is most comfortable: At home, counselling group office or a mutually agreed upon location.

How Are Referrals Made?

  • Our counselling  groups have open referral systems.

  • Referrals from public and private agencies, physicians, family, friends and self-referrals are welcome.

  • Requests are assessed and the client matched appropriately with a Senior Peer Counselor.

Training

Senior Peer Counsellors undergo an intensive training course following guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and given by experienced Senior Peer Counsellors, Trainers and Consultants.

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Listening skills

  • Helping the client tell his/her story

  • Problem management

  • Senior independence

  • Community information

  • Grief counselling (and others)

Ongoing training for all graduate Senior Peer Counsellors continues throughout the year. There is a Tremendous need within our community for Volunteers (Men & Women) to help other Seniors.

If you are interested in training as a Senior Peer Counsellor, talking to someone about this program, or making a donation, please contact Betty 604-796-0409.
